The word "computer" derived from the Greek word "computer"which means to calculate device, which can perform arithmetic and logical operations an enormous speed. Simply computer is electronic devices which can process large volume of data using per-defined instructions set by a human being with high speed $ accuracy, and give information as a result. The definition is pointing towards three major terms viz. Data, Processing and information.
Data
The term "data" is the plural though "data" is commonly used for both singular and plural forms. Data can be alphabetical and numerical and other symbols ($, @, +, ^,etc). We express values properties and names of entities through data. Ex-Ram, age, 26, good, man , etc.
Processing
Processing of data is manipulation data. Manipulation takes place on the basis of predefined instruction to give meaningful result.
Ex- Ram is a good man or Ram's age is 36.

Role of Computers
Nowadays, computers are used in every field of life, e.g. in an ATM, a railway reservation system. or a mobile phone, computer are used . the type of computer used at home or office is for more general purpose. A computer can perform any task provided it is given appropriate instructions.
Earlier computer were being used as stand-alone system in organization fulfilling own requirements. Computers are connected together via telecommunications lines to leading to a widespread availability of powerful computers. Since most modern computers are general-purpose computer, they can be used for numerous applications simply by changing the instruction sets. Some of the most common uses of computers are discussed below.
Home:
Some of the common uses of computers at home can be playing games, doing school work, writing letters, e-mailing friends and relating using internet, etc.
Education :
Nowadays, it is very important to have some computer knowledge. Computers are also required for storing students details, names, addresses, academic records and so on. Most schools now have some form of computer education. Students can learn about computer and make use of the ability by connecting to other institute around the world.
Business Establishments :
Companies use computer to store their records. Keep track of their customers, maintaining stock etc. Computers are used to play employees, send letters to customers, and communicate with other branches in remote areas.
Engineering:
Computers are also used in developing products (Computer Aided Design, CAD) and in manufacturing (Computer Aided Manufacturing, CAM). CAD system helps in designing various products, such as cuboids and cylinders. Once the designing part is over, a CAM system can be used to manufacture the products, particularly when manufacturing is performed using robots.
Banking and Finance Sectors:
The use of computers to mediate between bank and customer to growing, e.g. the use of Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) to withdraw cash, check personal bank records,and to make direct transfers to other accounts
Hospitals:
Hospitals use computer to help them it their day-to-day activities. Patient records are stored on PCs for easy of access , appointments are booked for them, and their vital signs can be constantly monitored. Computers are used for everything from diagnosing illness to monitoring patients during surgery, e.g. pacemakers, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computerized Axial Topography (CAT) scans.
Audio and Video:
Nowadays, most of the Hollywood movies, animation films, advertisements, etc, use computers extensively, to give the visual effects. Musicians produce electronic tones and digital soundtracks with the help of a system known as MIDI (Musical Instruments Digital Interface).
Communication:
Electronic mail has made it possible for people to connect with each other instantly worldwide.
Military Organizations:
They use computers in controlling ships submarines and airplanes Computer is also used in creating and controlling sophisticated weapons technology and in satellite communication.
